Getting to know Maurice Bernard's Face

My latest assignment for 7 Minute Stories was to paint a portrait of Maurice Bernard, aka: Sonny Corinthos, on General Hospital.

After setting up my digital file and research, I start with a pencil sketch to get the tones and details worked out. The paper texture background is something I created and we use in every podcast illustration as a unifying feature.

I then started blocking in the color and shadows using a Photoshop brush I created. It applies color like a filbert oil brush.

At this point it is a very rough and clunky painting, but the skin tones, shadows and shirt are ready to be noodled.
